 Photosynthesis Process Overview:


Photosynthesis is process in which plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy in chemical energy in form of glucose. This process occurs in the chloroplasts of the plant cells and involves the absorption of the light by the pigments is called chlorophyll.

The process of photosynthesis can be divided into two stages: the light-dependent reactions and the light-independent reactions.


1. Light-Dependent Reactions:

During the light-dependent reactions, light energy is converted into chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH. These reactions take place in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplasts and involve the absorption of light by pigments such as chlorophyll.

The light-dependent reactions can be further divided into two stages: the photochemical stage and the photophosphorylation stage.

During the photochemical stage, light energy is absorbed by pigments and transferred from one molecule to another until it is ultimately used to split water molecules into oxygen, protons, and electrons. The oxygen is released into the atmosphere as a byproduct of this process, while the protons and electrons are used to produce ATP and NADPH.

During the photophosphorylation stage, the energy from the ATP and NADPH is used to produce glucose during the light-independent reactions.


2. Light-Independent Reactions:

The light-independent reactions, also known as the Calvin cycle, take place in the stroma of the chloroplasts. During these reactions, carbon dioxide is incorporated into glucose using the energy from ATP and NADPH produced during the light-dependent reactions.

The light-independent reactions can be divided into three stages: carbon fixation, the reduction of ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP), and regeneration of RuBP.

During carbon fixation, CO2 is added to RuBP to form a compound called 3-phosphoglycerate (3-PGA).

In the reduction of RuBP stage, 3-PGA is reduced to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate (G3P) using the energy from ATP and NADPH.

In the regeneration of RuBP stage, G3P is used to regenerate RuBP so that the process can continue.

Overall, the process of photosynthesis is essential for the survival of plants and other photosynthetic organisms as it provides the energy they need to grow and reproduce.
